Depends on details: Many blood clots do not need to be removed. Thrombophlebitis, a condition whereby blood clots form in the veins under the skin (but not in the deep veins) will often get better with warm compression and non-steroidal medications like advil (ibuprofen). Other blood clots in deeper veins, known as dvt, can be treated with blood thinners. There are a few cases where a clot needs removal--these are more rare.
