A member asked:

Why would gyn treat amenorrhea with the pill (for period every 3 mos)? is there benefit to having period? harm to not have? p.s. not sexually active.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: Not having a period for >6 mths in a women who still make estrogen can lead to continued growth and thickening of the lining of the uterus. If not shed every so often this can increase the risk of endometrial (uterus) cancer so your ob-gyn was right to treat this even if not sexually active and you have been worked up for cause.
