I accidentally took active birth control pill on day 23 instead of placebo. i realized my mistake and then took the placebo. should i finish the pack as normal? do i need any back up precautions?

See answer : Missing a scheduled active pill is more of a potential problem (see labeling instructions as to what to do in that case) than taking an active pill during the placebo-taking time which may or may not cause a mild alteration in your cycle. Would recommend that you complete your placebo pills as scheduled.

Yes: I would go ahead and finish the placebo pills as directed, whenever there has been a mistake in the administration of contraceptive pills a back up plan is always safest. All the best.
