Black and blue.: If a vein is damaged from trauma, usually you will see discoloration of the skin either immediately after the injury or several days later. This occurs from blood escaping from the vein and leaking into the skin. Initially this may be dark (black and blue) and over several days as the body absorbs the blood, the color changes to yellow and then resolves.

IV vein damage: In order for an IV to enter a vein it has to damage the vein(every time it's placed). Luckily our veins are pretty hardy and they usually recover and heal these injuries. Sometimes we are not so lucky and they clot where they were punctured or rarely even become infected. Compared to the number of IVs placed the percent of complications is pretty low.
