Genetic disease: Hi. The G6PD gene is a gene on the X-chromosome for the enzyme, G6PD, which is important in red cell metabolism. Since it's X-linked (1 X chrom. in men; 2 X chrom.'s in women), having 1 mutant gene only causes disease in males. The mutant G6PD was selected for in evolution because it's protective against malaria. The disease it causes is anemia, usually in response to some oxidizing agent.
