I am assuming you: Are speaking of general spondylitis, and not specific types like akylosing spondylitis? If so, spondylitis is arthritis, often accompanied by inflammation of certain joints in the spine. This commonly seen in facet joints in the spine, which is where one vertebrae articulates with the next. It is normally a form of osteoarthritis similar to what you may see in other joints and can be very painful.
