A member asked:

Can overactive thyroid turn to underactive on its own?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Thyroiditis: Sometimes a thyroid is hyperactive because of an acute inflammation (thyroiditis). This can be secondary to an autoimmune (hashimoto's), or infectious inflammation. In this case, the thyroid can then become "under" active, or hypothyroid. It is unlikely for grave's to resolve w/o treatment. http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/hashimotos-disease/basics/definition/con-20030293.
