Culture or PCR assay: Ureaplasma (u) species are frequently detected in the lower urogenital tracts of healthy adults: 40-80% of asymptomatic and sexually active women and somewhat lower rates in males. Only a subgroup of adults who are colonized in the lower urogenital tract develop symptomatic illness from these organisms. (u) can be detected by culture but requires specialized media and techniques or pcr assays.
