Procaine HCl: Procaine hydrochloride, dev'd in 1905, was a popular amino ester-based local anesthetic, replacing addictive Cocaine in dentistry ; medicine til the 1970s. The anesthetic had vasodilation properties, so epinephrine, a vasoconstrictor, was often added to restrict blood flow and prolong anesthesia. Because of allergies, it was mostly replaced by amino amide anesthetics like Lidocaine (1943).
