A member asked:

Need doctor's help! what do your tonsils actually do?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Immune factor: It is believed that the tonsils are part of the immune system of the throat. This makes sense since babies/toddlers experience a good deal of the world with their mouths. They contain immune cells that help recognize 'self' from 'not-self' among the things that enter the mouth and throat. As we age, the tonsils will generally involute but this doesn't' always happen and they can be problematic.
