Various causes: most common are hemoglobinopathies. Abnormal hemoglobin genes cause decreased production or unstable hub, such as sickle cell, thalassemia and Hgb. E. Abnormal cell membrane proteins making red cells fragile such as hereditary spherocytosis or elliptocytosis. Less common are genetic conditions that produce damaged bone marrow cells like Fanconi's anemia.
