Length varies: 28 days is the length of the "idealized" menstrual cycle (2 weeks before ovulation and 2 weeks after ovulation) but the actual length varies +/- up to about 4 days and still be "normal". If there are hormonal fluctuations, ovulatory dysfunction (even temporary) , or certain medical conditions (like thyroid problems) , this can vary even more.

Menses: Being late or early for your menses by a few days is very common. If the problem persists and you don't get your period for up to one month at a time, during more than three months a year, then an evaluation for hormonal or endocrine misbalances is needed.
