Found out there is also a risk of breast cancer in my family. could a mastectomy be considered preventive medicine in my case?

Not necessarily: You need to have a discussion with your doctor about all the details and may get a genetic test. Even after that it is not an easy call, but it is not an issue for this forum.

If you have BRCA : If you have certain mutation that would put you at a significant high risk to have breast cancer like brca 1 or 2- prophylactic mastectomy as well as prophylactic salphyngooophorectomy/removing the tube and ovaries would be recommended. However if you don't have significant risk of breast cancer- it may not be a preventive medicine for you as you may not need one to begin with. Discuss with md.
