Broken: They can have very similar symptoms but it depends on the severity of the fracture and the severity of the sprain. This not a simple question at all. There are classification systems for fractures and sprains and both require x rays and /or ct or MRI imaging to determine what is really going on. See your podiatrist for assistance.

Ankle Sprain: Ankle sprains are very common injuries. There's a good chance that while playing as a child or stepping on an uneven surface as an adult you sprained your ankle--some 25,000 people do it every day. http://www.aofas.org/footcaremd/how-to/foot-injury/pages/how%20to%20care%20for%20a%20sprained%20ankle.aspx

Varies: Symptoms of a broken ankle and a sprained ankle are very similar. They both include pain, swelling, bruising, and limited walking. A broken ankle has the additional symptom of severe pain on weight bearing and thus typically one with a broken ankle will not put any weight on that foot or ankle.

See your podiatrist: You can have a sprain that hurts too bad to walk on and you can have a mild fracture that you can walk on. Protect your future and see your podiatrist who will examine and x ray it and get you back to activity.

Ankle sprain: Can result in the swelling, bruising, pain around the ankle, at one side of the ankle or both. If no fracture occured, pain is controlled well with ice, elevation, compression. However the osteo-chondral defects stemming from the subtle cartilage and bone injury may also result from a high grade ankle sprain. Proper evaluation by a foot and ankle physician is crucial for your speedy recovery.
