Herpes zoster: A common form of cutaneous neuropathic pain ("shingles"). Symptomatic treatment with analgesics is recommended, not specific medication. For most cases of acute hz the use of antiviral therapy (famciclovir or valacyclovir), is recommended to prevent postherpetic neuralgia, an extremely painful complication of hz.
