All of the above.: Penetrating radiation damages cellular mechanisms in any cell at the time the radiation strikes the machinery and alters its shape or chemical composition so that it does not work as intended. The damage could include alteration of cellular dna. This damage could accumulate over time to cause cancer or be transmitted to daughter cells.
