Thyroid disease: Psychiatric changes associated with thyroid disease depend on the type of thyroid problem. In hypothyroidism, the thyroid is underactive and the person may be depressed, lethargic, and have poor memory and concentration. May progress to suicidal ideation. In hyperthyroidism, the thyroid is overactive and the person can be restless, anxious, agitated, with racing thoughts, and insomnia.
