A member asked:

Could you explain what is hpv (human papillomavirus)?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Viral infection: There are many (dozens) of types of human papilloma virus, some of which result in genital warts (which is where it gets its name) and some of which can cause cervical dysplasia (a pre-cancerous change of the uterine cervix). These are sexually transmitted and are very common. Tests for hpv can be done at the time of a pap smear.
