A member asked:

Could you explain what is tga in pediatric cardiology, is it fatal?

Yes: Tga refers to a type of congenital heart disease in which the aorta is connected to the right ventricle (instead of the left ventricle) and the pulmonary artery is connected to the left ventricle (instead of the right ventricle). Unrepaired, this heart defect usually causes death within the first several days to weeks of life.

Switched arteries: The two large arteries coming out of the heart are switched--meaning all the blue blood without oxygen keeps circulating to the body, and all the red blood with oxygen keeps ciurculating to the lungs. There can be certain variations, but all essentially require surgery early in life, without which this condition is not compatible with life.

Generally: A "switch" operation is done to repair tga. Unrepaired the patient goes into heart failure and without heart transplantation , is fatal.

TGA: This is secondary to the great vessels being in the wrong chamber. Thus oxygenated blood does not flow properly and provide the needed 02.

Transposition: of the great arteries. The left ventricle pumps into the lungs via the pulmonary artery. And the right ventricle pumps to the whole body via the aorta. While there are other factors that influence outcome, this is a very serious problem that is often rapidly fatal if not corrected.
