The best pain drug?: Believe it not, there is no one "best pain drug". Different medications work differently for each individual. One patient will tell me "it did nothing for me" while another says it "knocked them out" (same medication and dose). Actually, the best pain relief is: see your dentist for treatment. That works 100% of the time.

Best Pain Drug: Different medications work differently, sometimes in the case of infection antibiotics can actually relieve pain although they are not pain medications. The best pain drug is to find out from a dentist what the pain is coming from, sometimes no drug is necessary at all. Pain medications are merely a mask, the real problem is hidden. You really need to find out the cause, please do that first.

Tooth analgesics: Generally, ibuprofen (i.e. motrin) over the counter 4 tablets (800 mg total) every 6-8 hours with 1 tablet (500 mg) of acetaminophen (i.e. tylenol) every 8 hours. Each drug is taken 4 hours apart. For example ibuprofen then 4 hours later acetaminophen, 4 hours later ibuprofen again, 4 hours later acetaminophen. This has been shown to be as effective as morphine preventing post operative pain

Dental treatment: If you have a toothache, you may have a cavity, wisdom teeth or advanced gum disease or tooth abscess. A tooth pain won't go away without treatment and the infection may spread to your jaw, cheeks, sinus and to other areas of your head and neck. You can use NSAID OTC or Tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain control. See a dentist ASAP for assessment/treatment.
