Strengthen quads: It's possible your lateral quads are pulling greater than the rest of the quadriceps resulting in irritation of the knee joint (patella and femoral bones). This is common in people exerting themselves or increased activity after prolonged inactive lifestyle. The treatment is rest, ice, and progressive strengthening of the quads.
