Higher SPF is better: The higher the spf the better coverage you have to keep the skin safe from uv damage. Usually spf 45 or higher is recommended if you are to be outside all day in the sun. Also you want to re-apply it at least 2-3 times a day as sweat, getting dirty and washing the skin will remove the cream protectant.

30: The number indicates the amount of time you can remain out in the sun compared to not wearing any sun screen. Therefore 30 would indicate 30x longer than someone who is not wearing sun block. Take into account the fact that you will sweat, you will go in the water, etc which will wash the cream off. Therefore reapply several times during the day. No need to spend the additional money for >30.
