Usually tendons &: Usually tendons and ligaments. I tell my residents; "the human musculoskeletal system is composed of bone, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and rice krispies." if you have no pain, do not worry.

Painless?: Painless clicking is usually caused by temporary gas bubbles that form in the joint fluid when the two surfaces of the joint are being pulled apart, as with cracking your knuckles. That's why it takes several minutes to hours to crack the knuckles again. It's noisy, but not dangerous. Painful clicking or grinding, or sharp popping that doesn't stop after 1-2 tries should be investigated, however.
