Dry socket: Don't worry or think about it. It's actually not that common. Follow your dentist's instructions, especially no smoking. You will know if you have it, you will be in severe pain 2-4 days following an extraction. If that's the case, see your dentist, as it's easily remedied.

Dry socket: Severe pain 2-4 days following an extraction and the absence of a blot clot in the socket are the two signs of a dry socket. You dentist can confirm this and offer you almost immediate relief by placing a special medication in the socket to encourage healing and alleviate the pain.

Dry socket or not?: Dry socket has two simple signs: 1 aching, throbbing pain in the gum or jaw. 2. Horrible taste and smell in your mouth. Since dry socket occurs exclusively following a dental extraction, no extraction--no dry socket.
