Curious about heart valve surgery and recovery. what are the risks and how long is recovery?

Varies: It will vary, of course, depending on what's being done and the health of patient. Risks include: bleeding, infection, rhythms disorders, blood clots, pneumonia, stroke, and death. Recovery takes 4-7 days in the hospital and 1-3 months of recuperation at home.

It depends: The risk of valve surgery varies with a lot of things. Age, general condition, previous surgery, and medical problems have an impact. Also the overall function of the heart and other heart problems, as well as the acuity of the procedure (elective, urgent, emergent). Likewise, recovery varies with the operation and patient. See a doctor for details. Good luck!

Complicated: Risk is commonly calculated with a computer model but clinical experience and judgement is invaluable. Information used to predict risk include patients status(frailty and functional status), organ status(kidney, liver , lung) heart function, amount of vascular disease, reason for operation, etc. Risk commonly range from 2 to 5% but can be higher.
