Complicated: Antidepressants increase certain neurotransmitters (e.g. Serotonin and norepinephrine) into the synapse between neurons, and down stream effects help both depressive and anxiety symptoms. These changes can reduce the frequency and intensity of these symptoms but not give you insight or skills. The specific gene and region changes responsible are still being researched.
