Absolutely : In fact, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is one of the known causes of emphysema in those people who do not smoke. Whether or not it causes emphysema depends on the degree to which that enzymes is deficient. And, if someone smokes with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, it makes the emphysema much worse.
