A member asked:

Smear of my wife: endocervical cell/metaplastic t.z. component absent, adequate squamous present, no evidence of sil in the sample, what mean? thanks

A doctor has provided 1 answer

PAP smear results: Pap sounds like it was normal. The cervix is composed of an endocervix (inner portion) and ectocervix (external part protruding into vagina). The transformation zone (tz) is the most common location for cervical cancer to form. Metaplasia is the change of one cell type to another and can increase the risk of cancer, but was absent. Sil (squamous intraepithelial lesion) can precede cervical cancer.
