Smoking: You are bleeding somewhere in your respiratory system and it is showing up in your mucous. Cancer risk begins to spike at 20 pack years of smoking. If you smoke one pack per day you are now at 18 pack years. I would advise stopping smoking immediately and getting a full exam and evaluation of your lungs.

Stop smoking: First, you need to stop smoking, no questions, no excuses. Secondly, a dark, thick, colored mucus may be indicative of an infection, possibly viral or bacterial. Best to get evaluated to determine if you require an antibiotic to get better. Best wishes.
