They fade away: Dead brain cells are gradually digested and removed from the cranium by other cells nearby. Often the space occupied by the dead neuron (or glia too) is replaced by water, ie cerebrospinal fluid. Sometimes special brain cells, called fibrous astrocytes, fill the void left by departed neurons.
