Varicoceles: Your doctor is correct. Observation is the standard here. Surgery can lead to more scarring and chronic pain.

Benign: Varicocele is veins that are prominent. Not a tumor or malignant and usually stays about the same over time. May even atrophy. But some risk if venous distress of testicle. Work up, to, be sure no other reason for venous congestion.
