See details: An ultrasound of a finger has limited usefulness. It may show inflammation or joint damage but is often no more helpful than an x ray for the finger issue.

Many things: Ultrasound is helpful to many things . It may show soft tissue swelling. Or other problems within the joint like narrowing or early erosion of bone. All without radiation exposure. In many ways it is more sensitive than standard x rays.
