A member asked:

Can you do abdominal exercises such as sit-ups, if you have a hiatal hernia?

Usually: A hiatal hernia is an enlargement of the hole in the diaphragm thru which the esophagus passes to enter into the abdomen. This usually causes no symptoms but may contribute to acid reflux if the stomach slides thru this hole into the chest. Theoretically, increased abdominal pressure, such as ab exercises, may accentuate this reflux; if so, this would cause heartburn at the time.

Yes: Ahiatal hernia is the stomach going through the diaphragm into the chest. You should not have any problems with exercises with a hiatal hernia.
