Pathologist: I would assume the surgical specimen was sent to pathology for analysis. If the pathologist finds cancer, he calls the surgeon or generates a report that the surgeon will get and should read. Of course, nobody is perfect but god so there can be missed diagnoses. It does not happen too often, depends on the expertise of the pathologist.
