Most want U out a da: Most schools want kids to stay out of school when they have a contagious illness that is easily transmitted to others. Age & personal hygiene (hand washing etc) mean older kids seldom need to avoid school for some minor issues, but most want u out at lease a day for conjunctivitis until you have received a days worth of drops/ointment & are not likely to spread it.

Yes and Should: The only problem with 24 hours of antibiotics is that if the eye infection is viral, the antibiotic drops do nothing! thus i tell patients that they are contagious until better. And that assumes it is not caused by allergies.Viral and/or bacterial conjunctivitis is a highly contagious disease and it is the responsible course to minimize other people's exposure.
