How do they calculate how many weeks pregnant you are in an ultrasound?

Reference tables: They will do various measurements of the baby and these will in effect be compared to the measurements of babies where we have accurate information about how many weeks they are. There is some variation but, particularly early in the pregnancy, we can judge how many weeks you are pretty accurately.

Measurements: During an ultrasound of a pregnant woman various measurements are done including the diameter of the baby's head, the circumference of the head and belly, and the length of arm and leg bones. How many weeks the baby is can be determined by those measurements. The earlier an ultrasound is the more accurate it is.
