First line meds: Are antidepressants, particularly ssris/snris, which treat both anxiety and depression, and do not cause dependency. Benzos are all effective for symptoms, but produce dependency, which may require dose escalation. I do not prescribe Alprazolam - it is very fast acting and short-acting, and thus has very high abuse potential. Clonazepam is probably most widely prescribed.
