I don't know: I see that you are 35 years old and you have given no other information. Often there's no telling why. I'm going to assume that this actually is acne and not one of its mimics such as folliculitis of the beard or a superficial fungus infection. A variety of medications and cosmetics can precipitate acne, and if you have other symptoms, it may warn of a hormonal disturbance your doctor could spot.
