Sometimes....: Treatment of a cough depends on the cause of the cough. When there is phlegm buildup, it may be caused by bronchitis (acute or chronic) or even pneumonia. If there is an acute infection, like bronchitis or pneumonia, then expectorating the sputum may help with symptoms. See your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
