A member asked:

I'm worried because my father is a smoker and has emphysema and i have been around him for 16 years what could happen to me, what do you suggest?

Screening: Just like any smoker, a second hand smoker will also get all the side effects of smoking, worst are cancers, especially lung and urinary bladder, atherosclerosis and emphysema. A visit to your doctor for health maintenance is all you need with an honest account of how you are feeling and good exam and health maintenance labs.

Very little: You have some second hand smoke exposure which may increase your risk of hyper reactive airway, but as long as you do not smoke it is unlikely you will develop copd. Other testing for Alpha 1 antitrypsin should be done.
