A member asked:

I'm worried because my dr has me on buspar (buspirone) several times a day but it doesn't help . does anyone know what a dr will normally give after trying the buspar, (buspirone) what do you suggest?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Maximize dose : The dose of Buspar (buspirone) should generally be maximized to a dose that is just below the dose that gives you a strange dizzy sensation felt in the back of the head. That will generally then be the therapeutic dose for that person. If the dose has been optimized and is still not working then the next option would be to switch to Lexapro which is approved for generalized anxiety disorder. That would be the next medication with the fewest side effects. Paxil is used but has significant side effects. Venlafaxine has also been approved but also can have more side effects certainly then lexapro. Prozac and zoloft or occasionally used for this purpose but the literature behind that is not as strongfor generalized anxiety disorder.Best wishes.
