Ask your dentist: If your wisdom teeth are erupted into a functional position, not decayed or creating problems with adjacent teeth or structures, the wisdom teeth do not need to be removed. Wisdom teeth are usually the last teeth in each jaw, and may be difficult to keep clean. Your dentist should evaluate the position and health status of the wisdom teeth and any potential for problems and advise you.

Everything relative: If you can clean them, you can keep them. If you can't clean them, get them out before they damage the teeth you need. See an oral surgeon or dentist with training in the complexities of wisdom tooth removal.

Retain or remove?: Dr. Quon and dr. Bobbitt both gave you great answers. The only thing that i would add to the equation is that i often see patients that have had more than their share of dental problems over the years and it became important in their case to use the wisdom tooth as an anchor for tooth replacement. You never know. If currently not a problem, you can always remove teeth later on if necessary.
