A 30-year-old female asked:

what age does hearing fully develop in an infant and how can loud constant music effect an infant? what decible is considered harmful to a 1 year old?

Birth: Hearing is developed at birth...Sooner...As we know unborn babies can hear their parents voices! and they respond to music. No one should be listening to music louder than 85 decibels.
Dr. Johanna Fricke

A newborn should : have good hearing & pass the newborn hearing screen in both ears. Hearing is fully developed by the end of the first month. Regular exposure to 85 decibels (dB) or > for a prolonged period of time, to 100 dB for > 15 minutes & to 110 dB or > for > 1 minute can cause permanent Noise-Induced Hearing Loss. Genetic predisposition to NIHL plays a role. See http://www.noisyplanet.nidcd.nih.gov for more.

Is it normal that my 1-year-old baby is not talking at all?

Yes: Every baby develops at a different pace and that's ok. Most babies by 12 months are babbling, understand their name and some may have a few words. It's helpful to have an understanding of when certain developmental milestones can occur. The CDC has a great list at: http://www.Cdc.Gov/ncbddd/actearly/milestones/milestones-1yr.Html if you're concerned, speak to your pediatrician.
A 42-year-old member asked:

What do you give a 1 year old baby for a cold ?

Dr. Alan Levine
Pediatrics 34 years experience
Lots of fluids: There is nothing specific that one can give for a cold. The aap has strongly come out against cough/cold medications under the age of 4. That being the case, you can suction the nose after using saline nose drops, keep the baby's head raised in the crib, and give a lot of fluid.

My one year old graanson stil clenches his fists like an infant. Should I be concerned?

Constant or sometime: If the kid can open the hands at will to touch items with a single finger & explore objects i would worry less . If the hand is held tightly clenched all the time you should have him evaluated. That would suggest neurologic injury.

Lactose intolerance?: Speak with your child's doctor. Your child might be lactose intolerant (due to lactase deficiency, a gentetically-determined condition). It's readily treatable with lactase supplementation (many milk products are available with lactase added).

Is separation from my one year old baby for one week can affect him emotionally, knowing that he will stay with his grandparents and he is used to it?

Not Long Term: In the long term, with loving caretakers there is no harm to him.He may show some short term changes in behavior such as eating or sleeping. This is due to changes in his routine while you are away.
