A member asked:

Can propranolol help prevent a brain aneurysm from rupturing? if not, what kinds of medicines are typically used?

Low Blood Pressure: Propranolol is a beta blocker and it reduces blood pressure so it can help to prevent an aneurysm from enlarging or rupturing. Calcium channel blockers are also used. It is very important to stop smoking if you are a smoker. For women, hormone supplements should not be used and that includes oral birth control pills.

Good question: If you have high blood pressure, propranolol, among other medications, if the BP can be lowered, can help prevent the progression of brain aneurysms. Smoking cessation is very important. We are doing some work to see if hormones may represent another nonsurgical preventative measure. Please see brain aneurysm center for women at www.Chicagoaneurysm.Com for more information.
