Bruxism: Non-functional (i.e. Not while chewing) can be benign if done infrequently or damaging if done often--especially if done in patients with acid reflux (gerd). Excessive tooth wear can destroy the teeth, expose sensitive nerves, disrupt tmjs, abrade the tongue, lips and tongue, and prematurely age the face. Have your dentist determine cause and fabricate a well-made night guard to minimize harm.

Depends on severity: There are many types of mouthguards for grinding and clenching. Over the counter ones actually may be too thick and throw the muscles into more spasms. Dentists can make custom made, well fitting mouthguards, either upper or lower (i like the lower ones.) the guards can be made of soft plastic or hard acrylic...Depends on severity of grinding. For daytime clenching, other types are indicated.
