A member asked:

Feeling unable to breath or knowing that you stopped breathing in sleep.. what is this called?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Sleep Apnea: In the deepest sleep level (stage 4) muscles relax and the tongue can fall back and obstruct airflow into the lungs. Breathing motions persist but no air gets in..The body's o2 level drops until it stimulates the brain to make you partially wake up. Sleep apnea's danger comes from the low oxygen level causing heart problems as well as chronic sleep deprivation since you never sleep deeply.
