Need more data: Palpitations my occur due to an abnormal heart rhythm; however, they might be felt during a normal rhythm as well. If they occur only intermittently, and if a medical examination does not reveal any other obvious problem such as hypertension, heart failure or thyroid function abnormality, then some form of ambulatory monitoring might be needed to document the cause of ones palpitations.

Maybe, Maybe Not: This may be normal [caused by exercise, fear, fever, or pain]. They can also be caused by abnormal, premature heart beats or by an abnormal fast heart rhythm. Need to document heart rate and rhythm during the episodes. If the palpitations occur every day, a 24-hour heart monitor can help make the diagnosis; if less frequent, a 30-day monitor would be more useful.
