What causes the blood to clot to move toward the heart?

Depends on origin: If a blood clot is in the leg (deep vein thrombosis), it can break loose and move towards the heart via normal venous blood flow. This clot can move through the right side of the heart and become lodged in the lung (pulmonary embolism) a clot in the left side of the heart can break loose, leave the heart via the aorta, and move to the brain causing a stroke.

Yes, but not often: Your heart can stop working if that clot breaks off and travels to the main arteries that leave the heart and enters the longs. This clot will cause the right side of your heart to push against increased pressure. This increases stress can eventually lead to your heart stopping.

What causes a blood clot to form behind the heart ?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. Bennett Werner
Cardiology 44 years experience
In the heart?: I'm assuming you mean "in the heart" as clots don't form behind the heart. The 2 most common causes are atrial fibrillation (clots form in the atria or upper chambers because of the abnormal rhythm) and early in the setting of a large anterior - apical heart attack (clots form in the ventricle or lower chambers).
