Nails sterile matrix: Or what you see under the nail plate (what you call the hard part of the nail) is very vascular and it bleeds. It normally is reddish in color from that blood supply no matter what shade or pigment one is. If it was taken off for infection, the best way to differentiate infection from normal hyperemia or redness from irritation and bllod flow is to ask the physician who took the nail off.
