Cough: In adults over the age of 55 there is a higher frequency of adult pertussis (whooping cough). Atypical pathogens like mycoplasma or chlamydia can produce long lasting cough syndromes. If you have no fever, loss of appetite, shortness of air, or other signs of infection might wait a week or two and if still present see a doctor. Good luck and hope this ends soon.

Allergic rhinitis: The most common cause is allergic rhinitis. Here there is little mucous that mostly flows and irritate the back of the throat and most will sense itching and they cough almost incessantly especially laying down. Know your allergy test, and avoid. Treatment is antihistamine and steroid nasal spray.
